About Survivors of Suicide Loss

Recent reports from the Medical Examiner’s Office of Denton and Collin County indicate that in 2016 there were 85 completed suicides in Denton County and 122 completed suicides in Collin County, the highest amount in 5 years.  Research reported by the World Health Organization shows that at least 6 people are intimately traumatized by a single suicide death. We believe those numbers are too low.  More recent estimates show the number of people intimately affected by a suicide loss is closer to 150.  We know that family, loved ones and friends bereaved by the sudden completed suicide of a friend or family member are 65 % more likely to attempt suicide.

“The largest public health problem is neither the prevention of suicide nor the management of suicide attempts but the alleviation of the effects of stress in the survivors whose lives are forever altered.” -Edwin S. Shneidman

Suicide postvention is the best prevention and because of that, we must reach out and do all we can to offer survivors services and resources, reduce the stigma, and talk about suicide openly. Let’s Talk About Suicide and mental illness and keep the conversation going, it’s important.
